The role of the children's department of the Shepherdstown Public Library is to provide a "Children's Gateway to Learning." In this spirit, the SPL Children's Library maintains a close relationship with the schools and provides the following services to the children of our community:

Regular Story Hours/Library Visits

Beginning each year in September and January, our library offers a weekly story time for each of these groups: "Lap Babies," "Time for Twos," and "Three-Five Year Old."

Story hours and visits are provided for the Shepherdstown Day Care Center, the Shepherd University Nursery School, the local Montessori schools, Trinity Church Treasure Kids, and other nearby schools.

Miscellaneous Visits

The library welcomes visits from homeschoolers, scout troops, Shepherdstown Elementary School students, and field trips from other schools. With FOSL support, the Library brings in professional storytellers whose performances are provided to the public free of charge. The library also serves the many elementary, junior high and high school students who come in search of reference materials for writing contests, science fairs, social studies fairs, and classroom reports. These children have access not only to our collection, but to interlibrary loans and Internet resources, as well. The children's department is also frequently used by Shepherd University students in the field of education.
